David Rosenthal

David Rosenthal started as Executive Director of LESHRC in April of 2004. He received his Ph.D. in Counselor education from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1974. Prior to his being hired at LESHRC he was the Director of La Bodega de La Familia. Dr. Rosenthal has also been a faculty member at the University of Iowa (for 23 years) in the Colleges of Medicine, Public Health and Education. During that time he was also the Director of Counseling and Health Promotion Services at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. His previous work experience also includes teaching at Sands Junior High School and working as a caseworker for the Department of Social Services in New York City.

Dr. Rosenthal has written over 40 refereed papers, and book chapters and co ‚authored or edited 4 books. In addition, with Dr. Michael Teague and David Gould, he produced a series of award winning videos focused on health. Individual videos in this series received recognition by winning silver and bronze medals at the New York Festivals, the Golden Cine, and numerous other awards. As a member of Prarielands Addiction Technology Transfer Center he produced and co-directed with Steven Henke two award winning videos entitled Sucker Punched and Nagi Kacopi. These video documentaries focused on Native Americans in South Dakota.

While a faculty member Dr. Rosenthal was also named Teacher of the Year by Residents in the Department of Family Medicine and was awarded the College of Medicine Service award. His community service included being Board President of Iowa City Hospice, Mid Eastern Council on Chemical Abuse (MECCA), Life Skills and as a member of the boards of the Iowa City Free Medical Clinic and the Institute for Social and Economic Development (ISED). He was also a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and served as President of the Iowa Association of Marriage and Family Therapy.

Dr. Rosenthal has given over 100 national presentations and internationally has done workshops in Zimbabwe, Uganda, Russia and Greece. He is also currently an adjunct faculty member at Brooklyn College.
